The 2013 Ford Fusion has been named the 2012 AOL Autos Car of the Year:
And our number-one new car of the year is the 2013 Ford Fusion--boldly redesigned to not only riase the bar from the original Fusion, but to meet the stalwarts of the category--Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima--pound for pound and dollar for value for performance, value and quality. 2013 Ford Fusion Named IIHS Top Safety Pick+
From Ford.com:
The all-new Ford Fusion earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) highest rating, a Top Safety Pick+, receiving an Acceptable rating in the new small overlap front crash test. The new 2013 Ford Fusion was already rated as a Top Safety Pick winner. This new rating, Top Safety Pick+, applies to all vehicles produced after mid-December 2012.
To earn the “+” distinction, Top Safety Pick Plus winners must earn good ratings for occupant protection in at least 4 of 5 IIHS evaluations, with no less than acceptable in any test. IIHS rates vehicles good, acceptable, marginal or poor based on performance in a moderate overlap frontal crash, small overlap frontal crash, side impact and rollover, plus evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts.
“Ford is thrilled to earn this new, highest safety distinction from IIHS,” said Steve Kenner, global director of the Automotive Safety Office. “The Fusion is a leading example of exemplary vehicles being designed and produced by Ford to the highest standards of safety.”

2013 Ford Fusion Trims Emissions and Fuel Consumption
From Ford.com:
Can the trim around a window switch save thousands of gallons of fuel?
It can if it was specified by Ford engineers.
The window switch surround in the new Ford Fusion saves 2,700 gallons of diesel fuel usage and nearly 60,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Traditionally, molded plastic pieces have been painted with a high-gloss finish to deliver both fashionable design and tough-as-nails durability that customers demand. But thanks to a new breakthrough in materials from supplier BASF, Ford is able to skip that step, thereby saving cost and reducing the environmental impact during production of the 2013 Ford Fusion.
If clear-coat paint had been used on these particular parts with the new Fusion, it would have required Ford’s supplier to ship parts from Kalamazoo, Mich., to Grand Rapids, Mich. This added step would have involved fueling and operating a fleet of trucks that emit tons of carbon dioxide, and subsequently applying a high-gloss finish to the parts that would then emit VOCs into the atmosphere. By creating a new resin that is mar-resistant, this entire step was eliminated.
Here’s how it works: The round trip between the plastic part molder in Vicksburg, Mich., and the painter in Grand Rapids is 128 miles. It takes roughly 18 gallons of diesel fuel for the transport truck for each trip. The trip is made three days a week, which requires 54 gallons of fuel. Presuming 50 weeks per year of production, this means Ford is saving 2,700 gallons of diesel and eliminating 59,400 pounds of CO2 from Fusion production each year.
All of this from changing the material in the trim around the window switches.

2013 Ford Fusion Takes Ultimate Test Drive
From Ford.com:
· All of Ford Racing’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers took the 2013 production Fusion for their first test drive recently at Ford’s Dearborn test track
· This marks the first time any of them had driven the all-new model, around which the 2013 NASCAR race car is designed
· The 2013 Fusion will serve as official pace car for Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway Nov. 16-18
What happens when you give nine NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers a chance to get behind the wheel of the most anticipated new midsize sedan of the year?
The ultimate test drive.
That’s what took place recently at Ford’s Dearborn Proving Grounds as Ford Racing invited all of its stock car drivers to take the all-new Fusion production car for a few laps around a makeshift course that emphasizes handling. And while this wasn’t a sanctioned competition, all of the drivers acted as if they were qualifying for November’s Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway – each one trying to go faster than the next.
“I was particularly impressed with Fusion on the slalom course because of its traction control technology,” said Greg Biffle, two-time winner this season of the No. 16 3M Ford. “I tried to get the car out of shape and it was saying, ‘No, no, no.’
“We don’t use traction control in NASCAR, so it amazes me how well a computer can take care of you when you’re driving aggressively on a closed course through cones,” Biffle added. “It really does help you stay on the road.”
Roush Fenway Racing teammate Carl Edwards agrees: “The Fusion surprised me,” said Edwards, owner of a Fusion Hybrid and driver of the No. 99 Fastenal Ford. “Trevor [Bayne] and I raced a Fusion against a Mustang for a couple of laps, and that Fusion is pretty dang sporty. I couldn’t believe how well it ran through the slalom cones they had set up for us. It’s a great car, and the one I got to drive was really cool.”

Ford Notices Every Detail
From Ford.com:
Ford engineers evaluated – and modeled – more than 100 pairs of sunglasses from designer frames to drug store knockoffs to achieve accurate dimensions of a wide range of shades. The goal was to ensure 95 percent of all sunglasses fit well into the 2013 Ford Fusion overhead stowage bin. Talk about dedication to making it possible for every driver to look their best on sunny days.
Using the coordinate measuring machine – a laser scanning device that produces accurate, to-scale 3D models on the computer – the engineers scanned real sunglasses to simulate how different types would rest in the overhead container.
Sejal Shreffler – core accommodation and usage engineer – explains, “Older sunglasses holders were designed for thin, wire-framed pairs, but fashions have evolved toward thicker, plastic shades. So we changed the bins to keep up with the trends.”

2013 Ford Fusion Features Variety of Sustainable Materials
From Ford.com:
When Ford’s all-new Fusion hits America’s highways this fall, it will carry some unexpected materials beneath its aerodynamically fuel-efficient body:
- Denim material equivalent to slightly more than two average-sized pairs of blue jeans
- 38.9 clear plastic 16-ounce recycled bottles
- About 31,250 soybeans
“Building vehicles with great fuel economy is our highest priority in reducing impact on the environment,” says Carrie Majeske, Ford product sustainability manager. “With every new product design, we also are charged with increasing the use of renewable and recyclable materials in our cars, utilities and trucks to reduce impact on the environment.”
Fusion’s jean pool
Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) control is held to world-class standards in the all-new Ford Fusion with post-industrial, recycled cotton used as sound-absorbing material. In every Fusion, the denim equivalent of slightly more than two pairs of average-sized American blue jeans helps to nullify unwanted road, wind and powertrain noise. Paired with other noise-reducing practices and techniques Ford engineers have implemented for years, the 2013 Fusion will provide customers with a quiet, relaxing driving environment.
Clearly sustainable
Fusion’s North American cloth seat surfaces are made with 100 percent REPREVE® yarn, which is a hybrid of post-industrial and post-consumer waste (or materials once utilized for industry purposes; and materials used by everyday consumers respectively). Cloth-seat Fusion models contain the equivalent of 38.9 recycled, clear 16-ounce plastic bottles. This fabric meets or exceeds all of Ford’s rigorous durability and performance standards and has a luxurious feel.
Post-consumer plastic water and soda bottles are collected, chopped, ground, melted and reformulated into chips. These chips are then extruded and textured into fiber. The fibers are then used in the creation of fabric, then dyed, finished and rolled for shipment.
Excess fabric from each procedure in the process is recycled back into the system to further eliminate waste.
Foam from soy
The foam used in seat cushions, seat backs and head restraints is a soy-based sustainable material, with the equivalent of approximately 31,250 soybeans.
Ford first used soy-based foam in the Ford Mustang in 2007. Today, Ford uses soy foam on every vehicle built in North America. Ford’s use of soy foam has reduced petroleum production by more than 5 million pounds and carbon dioxide emissions by more than 20 million pounds annually.
Post-consumer materials
Every 2013 Fusion utilizes plastic made from recycled car battery casings. These post-consumer materials were otherwise destined for a landfill. This plastic may be found in fender splash shields and other underbody components. Annually, these applications on the Fusion utilize close to 2 million pounds of recycled plastic.
