New V-6 For 2011 Ford Mustang

A new Ford Mustang V-6 for 2011 was introduced at the LA Auto Show.  Motor Trend wrote a great article highlighting some of the vehicle's many features.  You can read the entire article here, but here are some of the highlights:

The new Mustang V-6 is Ford’s first rear-drive application of its familiar 3.7-liter with twin-independent variable cam timing. The Mustang 3.7 includes aggressive deceleration shutoff, piston-cooling jets, polished valvetrain tappets and electric power steering and transmits its power through six speeds, automatic or manual.

And the numbers are impressive: Ford claims 305 horsepower at 6500 rpm, 280 pound-feet at 4250 rpm and 30 mpg with the automatic, on the highway. “We are the only ones who can provide 30 mpg and 305 horsepower,” says Barb Samardzich, Ford’s global powertrain vice president. What’s more, redline is now a Honda-like 7000 rpm.

In addition, Ford will offer the V-6 Mustang with a performance package, featuring the GT’s suspension with high-performance brakes, summer tires on exclusive 19-inch wheels and vehicle stability control. Ford figures it will be popular with Mustang’s younger buyers (read, “growing out of the Civic Si”). So the next Mustang-Camaro faceoff won’t just be about 0-60 and quarter-mile, it’ll be about which one can go furthest on a tank of gas, as well.

Ford Looks to the Future: 2010 Transit Connect

Have you heard of the 2010 Ford Transit Connect?  Fortune Magazine had a great article on this vehicle:

My Transit Connect was like the attractive person you see across a room to whom you are immediately drawn.

And so it was with this unique, futuristic vehicle. More and more Americans like their vehicles to be useful as well as stylish and the Transit Connect is more useful than any vehicle I can think off.

With room for five (thanks to a full-width second seat), loads of storage space, an extra-high roof, and easy-opening cargo doors, this vehicle lives for Saturday morning errands or the stop-and-go demands of a small business. It is a Honda Element raised to a higher level of carrying capacity; a PT Cruiser with an extra helping of mojo.

The TC felt rock solid, returned decent gas mileage (its combined EPA estimate is 23 miles per gallon) and carried a reasonable base sticker price (including delivery) of just over $23,000 (my as-tested vehicle came in at $24, 975).

One of the shortlisted vehicles for the North American Truck of the Year award (voted by some 50 automotive journalists), the TC gets high marks for functionality and originality. It creates a whole new segment — call it “compact hyper-functional utility vehicle” or “super high-roof stuff carrier.”

With a rear cargo space large enough to sleep in, it should be popular with ski bums, surfers, and college students who can’t drive home from the party.

An article at freep.com talks about a new program developed by Ford Motor Company and the University of Detroit Mercy.  They have developed a seven-course advanced electric vehicle program.  The skills taught in the course will help Ford and other engineers learn the skills needed to build electric vehicles.  The program will accommodate up to 45 students, though 30 of those slots are used by current Ford engineers.  Anyone with an engineering degree is open to take this course.
