Fast Selling for Ford C-MAX Launch

From Ford.com:

Ford’s all-new C-MAX has become the fastest-selling hybrid ever at launch, with 8,030 sales in its first two full months on the market in October and November. This significantly outpaces Toyota Camry Hybrid’s 7,300 sales in its first two full months in May and June 2006.

C-MAX hybrids also are selling three times faster than the combined sales for the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight when launched in 2000.

Ford sold 8,999 C-MAX hybrids through November, a figure projected to surpass by 40 percent through December the combined Prius and Insight launch sales of 9,350 in 2000. C-MAX sales would represent four months compared to the initial combined 18 months of Prius and Insight sales.

“Dealers are seeing an overwhelmingly positive response to C-MAX hybrids and are excited to finally take on Prius, with some offering comparison test drives right on their lots,” says C.J. O’Donnell, group marketing manager, Electrification. “Our customers also are excited to have a fresh hybrid option, with leading fuel economy that does not sacrifice driving fun, performance and technology – choices typically not offered with hybrids.”

Ford achieved its best electrified vehicle sales month ever in November with a total of 7,157 sales, with C-MAX hybrids acting as the driving force behind the milestone. Ford is projecting an all-time record quarter for hybrid sales at December close. More than half of Ford’s hybrid sales this year are expected to come in the final quarter of the year as the company continues to ramp up production of Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid.

C-MAX hybrid sales totaled 4,848 in November, up 52 percent month-over-month. November marked the first month both C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid were available on dealer lots.

2013 Ford Fusion Trims Emissions and Fuel Consumption

From Ford.com:

Can the trim around a window switch save thousands of gallons of fuel?

It can if it was specified by Ford engineers.

The window switch surround in the new Ford Fusion saves 2,700 gallons of diesel fuel usage and nearly 60,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Traditionally, molded plastic pieces have been painted with a high-gloss finish to deliver both fashionable design and tough-as-nails durability that customers demand. But thanks to a new breakthrough in materials from supplier BASF, Ford is able to skip that step, thereby saving cost and reducing the environmental impact during production of the 2013 Ford Fusion.

If clear-coat paint had been used on these particular parts with the new Fusion, it would have required Ford’s supplier to ship parts from Kalamazoo, Mich., to Grand Rapids, Mich. This added step would have involved fueling and operating a fleet of trucks that emit tons of carbon dioxide, and subsequently applying a high-gloss finish to the parts that would then emit VOCs into the atmosphere. By creating a new resin that is mar-resistant, this entire step was eliminated.

Here’s how it works: The round trip between the plastic part molder in Vicksburg, Mich., and the painter in Grand Rapids is 128 miles. It takes roughly 18 gallons of diesel fuel for the transport truck for each trip. The trip is made three days a week, which requires 54 gallons of fuel. Presuming 50 weeks per year of production, this means Ford is saving 2,700 gallons of diesel and eliminating 59,400 pounds of COfrom Fusion production each year.

All of this from changing the material in the trim around the window switches.

2014 Ford Fiesta to Feature Award-Winning Engine

From Ford.com:

The new 2014 Ford Fiesta on sale next year will be the first vehicle available in the United States with Ford’s award-winning 1.0-liter EcoBoost® engine. Though the car has not yet undergone EPA testing, it is expected to be certified as the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid car available in the United States.

The smallest engine available in its class, Ford’s patented 1.0-liter EcoBoost won’t be short on power, torque or refinement. The smooth, quiet-running engine is projected to produce 123 horsepower and peak torque of 148 lb.-ft.

“Customers are going to be pleasantly surprised at what the smallest member of the EcoBoost engine family can do,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president of Powertrain Engineering. “Most customers are not going to be thinking about the number of cylinders under the hood when they drive the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost Fiesta. They’ll notice an extremely smooth and quiet idle, terrific acceleration accompanied by a sporty sound at high revs, and – most importantly – outstanding fuel economy.”

The newest member of Ford’s global EcoBoost engine family, the 1.0-liter will join the most fuel-efficient lineup in Ford Motor Company’s history. Next year, Ford will offer eight vehicles rated at 40 mpg or higher – double today’s total, and more than any other automaker. Ford tops Toyota in fuel economy in every segment in which both companies compete.

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine in the Fiesta expands Ford’s power of choice strategy by giving customers interested in a very fuel-efficient car a new alternative.

Where Can the Ford C-MAX Energi Take You on a Tank of Gas?

From Ford.com:

America’s most efficient utility vehicle – Ford’s new 108-MPGe C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid – also has the most range of any utility or compact vehicle with a 620-mile overall driving range as rated by the Environmental Protection Agency.

This means C-MAX Energi customers could drive from Detroit to New York City, San Francisco to Las Vegas, or even Portland, Ore., to Twin Falls, Idaho, through the combined use of the power stored in the vehicle’s advanced lithium-ion battery and one tank of gasoline.

The Toyota Prius plug-in trails the C-MAX Energi by 80 miles at 540 miles of overall range, and the Chevrolet Volt comes in third at 380 miles.

“C-MAX Energi is America’s most efficient utility vehicle, a great symbol of how Ford gives customers the power to choose leading fuel-efficiency across our lineup with gas prices spiraling upwards of $5 a gallon in some parts of the country,” says John Davis, C-MAX chief engineer. “The C-MAX Energi’s leading range also means customers can spend more time on the road and more money on their priorities instead of at the gas pump.”

America's Most Fuel-Efficient Plug-In Hybrid: Ford C-MAX Energi

From Ford.com:

  • The C-MAX Energi is America’s most fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid with U.S. EPA-certified 108 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) in the city
  • C-MAX Energi achieves a best-in-class combined EPA-certified rating of 100 MPGe, topping the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid combined rating by 5 MPGe, which the EPA says will help customers save nearly $7,000 in fuel costs in five years
  • A Californian facing record $5-per-gallon gasoline and turning in an average 23-mpg vehicle for a C-MAX Energi would pay the equivalent of $1.25 per gallon for the same distances traveled
  • At $29,995, the C-MAX Energi is America’s most affordable plug-in hybrid; available this fall, C-MAX Energi is Ford’s first production plug-in hybrid, part of Ford’s first hybrid-only dedicated line of vehicles

Ford's 1.0 Liter EcoBoost Engine Wins Award

(photo from Ford.com)

From Ford.com:

Ford Motor Company’s innovative 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost®engine has been honored with a Breakthrough Award from Popular Mechanics magazine.

Each year the magazine selects the 10 technology products that matter most. In addition to the newest member of Ford’s global EcoBoost engine family, awards were also given to a new type of camera, a very affordable 3D printer and several other high-tech items.

While the 1.0-liter EcoBoost is Ford’s first three-cylinder engine – and one of the smallest-displacement engines Ford has ever built – it is not short on power or refinement.

Already on sale in Europe, this newest EcoBoost engine packs up to 125 horsepower and is loaded with technical innovations. It delivers impressive acceleration and is one of the smoothest and quietest engines in Ford’s lineup globally.

“We placed the bar incredibly high when we set out to design this engine,” said Joe Bakaj, Ford vice president, Global Powertrain. “We wanted to deliver eye-popping fuel economy, surprising performance, quietness and refinement – and all from a very small three-cylinder engine.

“The team responded to this seemingly impossible challenge with some really exciting innovation,” added Bakaj. “We are thrilled Popular Mechanics has recognized the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine for a Breakthrough Award.”

Earlier this year the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine was named “International Engine of the Year” by a jury of 76 journalists from 35 countries. The 1.0-liter engine, available in Europe in the Focus, C-MAX and B-MAX models, features a split cooling system, offset crankshaft, variable oil pump and other innovations.

Ford plans to offer the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine globally, including North America. EcoBoost features turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing to enable a smaller, downsized engine to deliver the performance of a larger engine with about a 20 percent gain in fuel economy.

Ford Joins 'Archtober' Discussions

From Ford.com:

  • “Archtober” panel discussion will highlight how consumers want more from both buildings and vehicles today – increased sustainability and efficiency inside, originality and unique design outside
  • Ford is collaborating with American Institute for Architects (AIA) as part of New York’s “Archtober,” a month-long celebration of architecture and design
  • Vehicles and buildings provide much of our visual landscape; as they evolve and change, our world will change with them
Sleekly fashioned from steel and glass, carefully sculpted with brick and marble, today’s buildings are judged on exterior aesthetics as well as increased interior function. They have much in common, then, with today’s automobiles, now designed as sustainable, efficient methods of transportation as well as high-tech works of art.

It’s with those comparisons in mind that Ford Motor Company has joined with the American Institute for Architects (AIANY) New York Chapter to celebrate “Archtober,” a month-long festival of architecture activities, programs and exhibitions in New York City.

Ford and AIANY are hosting “Ford and Architecture,” a luncheon panel featuring Ford automotive design experts and New York-based architects who will discuss how societal trends influence and inspire both the architectural and automotive industries.

“There are many parallels between architecture and automotive design,” says Jeff Nield,
manager, Strategic Design Vision and Futuring for Ford. “Both disciplines are based around a human-informed creative process. In each case, people will spend significant lengths of time experiencing the exterior and interior.”

2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid Offers Quiet Fuel Efficiency

From Ford.com:

Powertrain noise in the all-new Ford Fusion Hybrid is like the proverbial tree that fell in the forest. With Active Noise Cancellation technology on board, if you don’t hear it, is it really even there?

Active Noise Cancellation technology helps enable the 2013 Fusion Hybrid sedan to deliver EPA-certified 47 mpg city and 47 mpg highway ratings that combine for 47 mpg overall.

The fuel economy connection may not be obvious, but Active Noise Cancellation allows Ford engineers to tune the car for more fuel-efficient operation.

Calibrating an engine requires careful balance between delivering the desired performance with the lowest possible fuel consumption and emissions, all while keeping it pleasant to drive.

“The Fusion Hybrid leverages this advanced technology to help deliver maximum fuel economy for the customer,” said Henry Ford Technical Fellow for NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) Dr. Takeshi Abe. “Reduced powertrain noise in the passenger compartment becomes the icing on the cake.”

At the lower speeds that help efficiency, engines produce booming, low-frequency sounds that can be unpleasant to the driver and passengers. Without Active Noise Cancellation, engineers have to keep the engine out of this operating range, sacrificing efficiency.

Yet to achieve peak fuel economy, a creative solution must be applied harnessing advanced audio technology to eradicate this unwanted sound.

A predictive control system notes driver behavior and how the engine responds, anticipating noise before it is even generated.

Three highly sensitive microphones are mounted in the Fusion Hybrid’s interior headliner – two over the first seating row and one over the rear – to detect and measure engine noise. These microphones send a signal to the Active Noise Cancellation control module in real time.

The module instantaneously and continuously generates opposing sound waves. This reversed wave is directed through the Fusion Hybrid’s audio system, combining with the original engine noise wave to cancel out any potentially objectionable sound.

Ford Sets Guinness World Record

From Ford.com:

The game was a unique and fun element of an employee celebration at Ford’s Dearborn World Headquarters as part of a five-city U.S. launch of the all-new Fusion. Four hundred and fifty-one employees got the chance to take a trip back to their childhood while participating in “Red Light – Green Light” to showcase the Auto Start-Stop feature that allows Fusion drivers to save fuel and produce fewer emissions when stopped in traffic. 2013 Ford Fusion Takes Ultimate Test Drive

From Ford.com:

·        All of Ford Racing’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers took the 2013 production Fusion for their first test drive recently at Ford’s Dearborn test track

·        This marks the first time any of them had driven the all-new model, around which the 2013 NASCAR race car is designed

·        The 2013 Fusion will serve as official pace car for Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway Nov. 16-18

What happens when you give nine NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers a chance to get behind the wheel of the most anticipated new midsize sedan of the year?
The ultimate test drive.
That’s what took place recently at Ford’s Dearborn Proving Grounds as Ford Racing invited all of its stock car drivers to take the all-new Fusion production car for a few laps around a makeshift course that emphasizes handling. And while this wasn’t a sanctioned competition, all of the drivers acted as if they were qualifying for November’s Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway – each one trying to go faster than the next.
“I was particularly impressed with Fusion on the slalom course because of its traction control technology,” said Greg Biffle, two-time winner this season of the No. 16 3M Ford. “I tried to get the car out of shape and it was saying, ‘No, no, no.’
“We don’t use traction control in NASCAR, so it amazes me how well a computer can take care of you when you’re driving aggressively on a closed course through cones,” Biffle added. “It really does help you stay on the road.”
Roush Fenway Racing teammate Carl Edwards agrees: “The Fusion surprised me,” said Edwards, owner of a Fusion Hybrid and driver of the No. 99 Fastenal Ford. “Trevor [Bayne] and I raced a Fusion against a Mustang for a couple of laps, and that Fusion is pretty dang sporty.
