Ford Brings Superior Shifting to Ford Focus

The 2012 Ford Focus will feature an inventive transmission technology that will offer superior shifting:

•2012 Ford Focus, featuring a 2.0-liter direct-injection gasoline engine and PowerShift dry-clutch six-speed automatic transmission, incorporates Ford’s patented Torque Hole Filling (THF) technology for smoother, more seamless shift quality


•THF uses a combination of mathematical modeling and computer-aided engineering tools, along with other enabling transmission technologies to deliver smoother upshifts

•Originally penned in 1986, the Ford-developed THF invention disclosure came to fruition as computing power and transmission technologies caught up with the pioneering idea

•In internal evaluations, THF improved shift quality ratings by up to 2 points (out of 10) in comparison to baseline shifts with conventional controls

Ford's Intelligent Vehicle Research Could Make Roads Safer

Ford is committed to driver safety, and that commitment is exhibited in their Intelligent Vehicle Research:

•Ford is rapidly expanding its commitment to intelligent vehicles that wirelessly talk to each other, warning of potential dangers to enhance safety and flag impending traffic congestion to help improve the environment


•Intelligent vehicles could potentially help in 81 percent of all police-reported light-vehicle crashes involving unimpaired drivers, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report

•Ford is building the first-ever prototype intelligent vehicles that will tour the U.S. beginning this spring and will provide additional prototypes for the Department of Transportation’s world-first research clinics expected to begin this summer

•Ford is doubling its intelligent vehicle investment in 2011 and plans a new 20-member task force of scientists and engineers to explore the technology’s broader possibilities

New Ford Focus Features EcoMode

The new Ford Focus features EcoMode, a program that helps drivers learn to drive more eco-friendly for increased fuel economy:

•Ford EcoMode is a software application available on the new Ford Focus that rates driver behavior impacting fuel economy and then offers up simple hints on how to improve eco-driving skills through a fun scoring system


•EcoMode measures driver behavior for parameters such as gear shifting, anticipation (driving as constant as possible) and speed displaying performance on the instrument cluster screen

•Previous internal Ford tests show that using eco-driving techniques can improve fuel economy by an average of 24 percent

•EcoMode is standard on Focus SE, SEL and Titanium models
