Ford Offers Tips for Safer Driving in 2011

Ford is offering all drivers tips for driving safer in 2011:

1. Click it – even when you’re not worried about a ticket. Always buckle that safety belt – no exceptions. In 2009 alone, the use of safety belts in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 12,700 lives in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Isn’t that statistic alone worth taking that extra two seconds to click on the belt when you travel – and make sure your passengers do, too? In case you do forget, however, you can bet your vehicle’s safety belt reminder systems won’t. Ford’s own BeltMinder™ system has been credited by NHTSA for increasing the buckle-up rate, based on a study done by Ford and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showing that safety belt usage increased five percent among drivers in vehicles with BeltMinder.

2. Keep your eyes on the road ― not on your cell phone. Avoid unnecessary distractions. According to a 100-car study conducted by Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, driver inattention that may involve looking away from the road for more than a few seconds is a factor in nearly 80 percent of accidents. That means no texting – no message is that important!

3. Read a good book – like your owners’ manual. You know the one; it’s been languishing in your glove compartment. Reading through it will give you some valuable safety information and could even save you some money. For instance, Ford owners might be surprised to find out they don’t need those oil changes every 3,000 miles like they used to. Many new Ford models allow 10,000 miles between oil changes.

4. Scrape that ice, ice baby! On wintry mornings, don’t be one of those people trying to negotiate the roads peering through a tiny hole of visibility in the windshield. That’s just plain dangerous. Leave an additional 5-10 minutes of time in the morning to scrape the snow and ice from your car and give your defroster a chance to do its job.

5. Find out how technology is working to keep you safer. Today’s vehicles are equipped with state-of-the-art technology that can help keep you safer – but it always helps if drivers better understand these features. Take your anti-lock-brake system, for example. Many of us grew up being told to pump the brakes when we hit a patch of ice. That’s not the right technique with four-wheel ABS technology. With ABS, pumping the brakes turns the anti-lock brake system on and off, which decreases braking efficiency and increases your stopping distance. ABS pumps the brakes automatically at a much faster rate than you could do it manually and allows better steering control.

6. Learn how to parallel park – or buy a car that does it for you. Many of us dread the experience of learning to parallel park. Even after years of driving, some still hesitate, faced with the prospect of blocking traffic while negotiating our way into a street-side space. Ford collaborated on a nine-month research project with the MIT New England University Transportation Center that evaluated stressful driving activities – and parallel parking ranked highest. So let this year be the year you master the art of parallel parking – or let technology help. Ford is equipping more vehicles with its innovative Active Park Assist technology – even the new Focus, making it the first vehicle in its class with this new technology. The system uses an ultrasonic-based sensing system and Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) to position the vehicle for parallel parking, calculate the optimal steering angle and quickly steer the vehicle into a parking spot. It eliminates much of the stress. And MIT researchers say reducing stress can make us better drivers.

7. Listen to your mother – sit up straight. Make sure your seat and headrest are adjusted correctly in your vehicle to give you the optimum support. Your legs shouldn’t be overstretched to reach the pedals; you should be able to glance up and out at your mirrors with ease.

8. Check your pressure on all four tires – and the spare. Don’t confuse the “maximum tire pressure” written on the sidewall of the tire with the “recommended tire pressure” provided by the manufacturer – that’s found in that handy owner’s manual you’ve resolved to read and on a sticker conveniently located on the driver’s side door jamb. Also, show your spare you care by storing it in the trunk, where it will return the favor by getting you out of a jam should one of your tires spring a leak.

9. Take a cue from the Boy Scouts ― Be Prepared. You never know what cold weather will bring, so make sure you’re carrying the essentials in case you get stuck or stranded. We recommend your list include water, blankets, granola bars or beef jerky, a few road flares, a good flashlight (and extra batteries), jumper cables, and a bag of kitty litter for traction if you’re stuck in snow.

10. 4, 3, 2 … If you’re counting down to the New Year – stop right here. Remember the two-second rule. The vehicle in front of you should be passing a road marker two seconds before you to assure you’re not tailgating. Some drivers’ manuals even recommend a three-second rule. Remember, the New Year’s goal is to get acquainted with YOUR car, not the one in front of you!

Ford Escape/ Kuga Concept to Appear at Detroit Auto Show

A new Ford crossover concept will likely appear at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show:

Based off of the 2012 Focus' platform, the new Escape/Kuga is expected to go into production in the second half of 2012 and be sold as a 2013 model in the United States. At this time, it is unclear as to whether or not Ford will keep both the Escape and Kuga names in the vehicles' respective markets. The automaker's "One Ford" global product strategy would call for a single name for vehicles sold in different regions, and the Blue Oval team will surely face a similar problem with the redesigned Fusion and Mondeo sedans in the near term.

Recycled Clothing Finds its Way to 2012 Ford Focus

Ford's committment to the environment is showing in the use of recycled clothing in the interior of the 2012 Ford Focus:

•Ford is using recycled cottons in the interior of the new 2012 Focus as part of carpet backing and sound absorption material

•Cotton from post-consumer, recycled blue jeans is an example of the material used in the new Focus as part of the drive to find creative eco-friendly materials

•The use of environmentally friendly materials is part of the company’s commitment to “reduce, reuse and recycle”

The 2012 Focus, on sale early next year in North America and Europe, uses these cottons from recycled clothing in areas such as carpet backing and sound-absorption materials for interior quietness. Using environmentally friendly materials, including recycled clothing, is one part of Ford’s overall green strategy.

“Ford is continually looking for greener alternatives,” said Carrie Majeske, product sustainability manager. “One of our key goals is to use more recycled or renewable materials without compromising performance or durability. Recycled content is a way to divert waste from landfills and reduce the impact of mining virgin material.”

Ford’s “reduce, reuse and recycle” commitment is part of the company’s broader global sustainability strategy to reduce its environmental footprint while at the same time accelerating the development of advanced, fuel-efficient vehicle technologies around the world.

From the composite oil pan and compacted graphite iron block to the cleverly packaged small-frame dual-compressor turbocharger placed beneath the intake manifold between the cylinder banks, the new Power Stroke is a magnificent piece of machinery, arguably the finest heavy-duty pickup diesel of the modern era.

Three Mustangs Inspired the 2012 Boss 302

The 2012 Boss 302 can thank 3 previous Mustangs for the inspiration behind its creation:

  • Ford offered Boss 302 and 429 versions of Mustang from 1969 to 1970; the Boss 351 was built for 1971 only on a larger, restyled Mustang body
  • The original Boss 302 cars were designed to dominate SCCA Trans-Am racing with a high-revving small-block V8 and outstanding road-holding capability; Boss 429 cars were designed with acceleration in mind and built to satisfy NASCAR engine homologation requirements
  • All classic Boss models are coveted collectibles today thanks to outstanding performance and limited production numbers
For 2012, Mustang Boss revives a legendary name known for uncompromising performance on the road and the track. Arriving in 1969, the first Mustang Boss was forged from a simple mandate by Ford management to the designers and engineers: Create a Mustang that would be unbeatable on SCCA race courses and local drag strips alike.
By then, Mustang sales success was assured thanks to its sporty nature. As a true high-performance icon, however, the car’s history had yet to be written. That changed when company leadership decided to pursue dominance in the popular SCCA Trans-Am road racing series. They chose to homologate their new NASCAR 429 engine using the Mustang, directing engineers to begin creating performance that would become legendary.
The result – Boss – spanned three engine configurations across two Mustang body styles, each of which remains a coveted classic among enthusiasts and collectors today.

Laguna Seca Package Creates Track Ready 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302

The Laguna Seca Package for the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 will create a track-ready vehicle:
  • Laguna Seca package pares the race-inspired 2012 Mustang Boss 302 down to its essential elements, with aggressive suspension, chassis and aerodynamic tuning creating a ready-for-racing Boss
  • Ford Mustang team members developed the package to provide weekend racers with a factory track car that could be driven to the course, take the win, then driven back home again
  • R-compound tires, rear seat-delete, aggressive front splitter for track use, and rear spoiler and rear cross-car bracing shave seconds off track times and boost lateral acceleration to 1.03 g
“The Laguna Seca package puts a race-ready version of the new Mustang Boss 302 directly into enthusiasts’ hands,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas. “Laguna Seca isn’t intended for Boss buyers who simply want an exhilarating daily driver. Think of it like a factory-built race car, which we hope avid racers and track-day fans are going to love.”

Boss Laguna Seca builds on the bumper-to-bumper improvements found on the standard Boss while further stiffening the chassis and installing an aerodynamics package carried over almost in its entirety from the Ford Racing Boss 302R.

“Drivers who know how to get the most from a tuned race car on a closed course are going to be amazed by what the Laguna Seca is capable of,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “The balance, agility and tuning of each vehicle system places the driver at the center of the machine, completely connected to everything the car is doing.”

Ford Makes Changes on 2011 Ford Explorer

For 2011, Ford has updated their popular Explorer model:

For two decades, the Explorer offered on a truck-based body-on-frame platform 2- and 4-door body styles, rear- and four-wheel drive, V6 and V8 engines and enough off-road capability to serve the tiny fraction of owners who actually took them off road.

The big news for the 2011 model is its shift to unibody construction to reduce weight, boost mileage and give the Explorer more car-like ride and handling characteristic.Given the success of the so-called crossover market - SUV-like vehicles that ride on car instead of truck architectures -- it makes sense to evolve the Explorer in an effort to keep pace with today's utility buyers' tastes.

Ford Wins Most Awards in J.D. Power & Associates 2010 APEAL Study

Ford has won five segment awards in the 2010 J.D. Powers' Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout Study (APEAL):

Ford received five segment awards, more than any other brand, in J.D. Power and Associates’ 2010 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study. The closely watched survey measures customer satisfaction in design, content, and vehicle performance.

In June, the Ford brand achieved the highest initial quality among all non-luxury brands in J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Initial Quality Study (IQS). For the second consecutive year Ford was the only non-premium brand to achieve above industry average scores in both J.D. Power’s IQS and APEAL studies.

In this year’s APEAL survey, owners of the 2010 Ford Fusion, Taurus, Flex, Expedition and Explorer Sport Trac, rated these vehicles highest in their respective segments for vehicle appeal, which is comprised of style, comfort, performance and other vehicle attributes.

“It’s a significant accomplishment to do so well in APEAL on the heels of receiving high marks from J.D. Power on initial quality,” said Bennie Fowler, group vice president, Global Quality and New Model Launches. “The APEAL results stand as another proof point that Ford is redefining quality. We know it’s not enough to build defect-free cars and trucks. We move to the next step by delivering an experience that exceeds our customers’ expectations with features they would expect to find only in high-priced luxury lines.”

  • All-new Ford Explorer SUV offers best-in-class fuel economy with technologically advanced powertrains featuring multiple enhancements to improve mechanical efficiency
  • Explorer offers an optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost™ I-4 engine delivering V6 power with four-cylinder fuel efficiency
  • Electric power-assisted steering, battery management, fast engine warm-up and the first North American Ford application of a variable-displacement air conditioning compressor all combine to improve drivability, increase efficiency and save fuel.
The 2011 model equipped with an optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost™ I-4 engine will be the new class leader in the mid-size SUV segment, achieving at least a 30 percent increase in fuel efficiency compared with the current V-6-powered Explorer.

“The all-new Explorer will give a huge universe of existing and prospective customers the capability they expect and the luxury and convenience they want, all combined with the fuel economy they need,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas.

The new Explorer, due in Ford showrooms later this year, has added comfort and convenience features, while overall vehicle weight is reduced compared to the previous model. Extensive use of lighter and stronger high-strength steels such as boron add durability while saving weight. An aluminum hood is used, while a one-piece composite front bolster – the radiator support between engine and grille – is 65 percent lighter. Lighter weight equates to fuel and money saved.

Ford Works With Nuance to Enhance SYNC

Ford has increased the voice-capabilities of their SYNC system by working with voice-technology experts, Nuance:
  • With the introduction of MyFord Touch™ driver connect technology, Ford makes it easier to control in-car systems with fewer steps and more natural language; customers can now speak more than 10,000 first-level commands, up from only 100 in first-generation SYNC®
  • Working with voice control leader Nuance, SYNC will recognize more direct voice commands such as “Call John Smith,” “Find ice cream” and “Add a phone,” allowing users to do more with fewer steps
  • Innovative features boost recognition accuracy and provide “Samantha,” the voice of SYNC, with smoother, more natural speech patterns
  • Consumer acceptance of voice control is increasing; the Harris Interactive® 2010 AutoTECHCAST survey found an 8 point year-over-year improvement, and industry analysts predict continued segment growth
At the heart of SYNC is the speech engine, and Ford is working with speech technology leader Nuance to create and integrate a vast library of possible driver requests. This library will enable the SYNC speech engine to listen for and respond to more voice commands directly, recognize different words that mean the same thing (aliases), and integrate a vast number of point-of-interest (POI) names and business types into its navigation system.

“With this latest generation of SYNC, users can control the system without having to learn nearly as many commands or navigate as many menus,” said Brigitte Richardson, Ford global voice control technology and speech systems lead engineer. “As we’ve gained processing power and learned more about how drivers use the system, we’ve been able to refine the interface. Customers can do more and say more from the top-level menu, helping them accomplish their tasks more quickly and efficiently.”

New 2011 Lincoln MKX Leads in Luxury Crossover Segment

The new 2011 Lincoln MKX is set to be a leader in the luxury crossover segment due to its best-in-class power, torque, and fuel economy:
  • 2011 Lincoln MKX receives official certification by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with best-in-class fuel economy of any luxury midsize crossover, delivering 19 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway
  • 2011 Lincoln MKX also boasts best-in-class 305 horsepower, 40 more than the outgoing product, and 280 lb.-ft. of torque versus all V6 competitors
  • New 3.7-liter V6 engine employs several fuel-efficient strategies that also improve performance, including twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT), aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff and battery management
For the 2011 MKX, engineers integrated the new 3.7-liter V6 engine, which uses twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) to increase the vehicle's power and fuel economy. The broadened torque curve allows the intake valve to be advanced, delivering about a 10 percent power increase compared to non-Ti-VCT engines. Variable timing control of both the intake and exhaust camshafts helps extract more energy from each drop of fuel, leading to a 4.5 percent improvement in fuel economy.

The engine also employs a control strategy called aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff to save fuel. This strategy shuts off the engine when the driver doesn't need engine torque. It uses the momentum from the torque delivered to the transmission to move the vehicle, rather than more fuel.

Ford's SYNC with Traffic, Directions, and Information (TDI) will soon be able to send a destination from Google Maps to their vehicle:

‘Send to SYNC’ is a new capability added to the Ford Service Delivery Network, the company’s cloud-based architecture, which provides a suite of voice-activated services accessible through a customer’s mobile phone.

“Printing paper directions from a website is a relic in our digital age,” said Doug VanDagens, director of Ford Connected Services Solutions Organization. “With Send to SYNC, you can map a destination at home, at work – wherever you have connectivity – and when you get to your car, it already knows where you want to go. It’s convenient and it eliminates the waste and distraction of paper maps, conserving resources while helping drivers keep their eyes on the road.”

The SYNC TDI application leverages a customer’s mobile phone voice plan and the vehicle’s integrated GPS receiver to deliver location-based services, such as driving directions or business searches, and on-demand information such as horoscopes, news, movie listings and stock quotes.

Ford Provides Info to Prepare for Summer Road Trip

This article from Ford will help you get your car ready for a summer road trip:

The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics reports that more than three-quarters of summer road trips cover a distance of 50 to 249 miles each way. That means most drivers are at least an hour or more from home – and their local mechanic or dealership – making proper preparation of the family car all the more important. While getting stranded in the summer doesn’t pose the same risks inherent in winter travel, drivers can minimize the hassle and inconvenience of a breakdown and the chance of an accident with a few simple prep steps before setting out.

Check all fluids

Just as with people, fluids are critical for vehicles when the heat is on. Check your owner’s guide for the proper procedures to verify the following:

Engine oil, including scheduling an oil change if it’s time
Coolant level
Automatic transmission fluid (where applicable)
Brake fluid
Power steering fluid
Windshield washer fluid
Tires are your safety cushion

When you consider that tires are all that separates your car from the road, it’s essential you inspect your tires to ensure they’re going to make the journey safely:

Examine the tread for excessive or uneven wear and deep gouges, and check sidewalls for bulging or cracking

Check and adjust tire pressures using the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations, not the maximum pressure listed on the tire sidewall. Manufacturer pressure recommendations are usually shown on a sticker affixed to the driver’s door and printed in the owner’s guide

Don’t forget to check the condition and inflation pressure of the spare tire

Visibility aids safety

Most people recognize that a good view out the windshield and windows is essential to safe driving. But how long has it been since you checked your brake lights, directional signals and headlights for proper operation?

Check wiper operation and blade condition, replacing any blades that don’t clean the windshield on the first pass

With a helper, check operation of the brake lights (including the center high-mount brake light) and reverse lights

Check operation of headlights (high and low beams), all directional signals and taillights

Plan your route and be aware of conditions

Regardless of whether you have a set destination – and route – in mind, or you’re seeing where the road takes you, a little knowledge of the route and conditions you might encounter can go a long way toward ensuring a safe and pleasant journey.

Whether you’re using a portable GPS system or a built-in navigation aid like Ford SYNC® with Traffic, Directions & Information, make sure you have destination addresses and any cables/plugs/connectors needed to set up the unit

Be aware of changing weather and climate on long trips: Plains states can experience rapid severe thunderstorm development, while travelers crossing desert terrain should bring emergency water for passengers in case of a breakdown

One final note: If you’re bringing a pet along for the ride, never leave it unattended in the vehicle. In many states it’s illegal, and even seemingly mild temperatures can rapidly create a lethal environment inside a car – even with the windows cracked.
